The wired corporate world is a death trap, and as the NYT article below says, unproductive too.
The risk increased with cumulative use.
The risk of brain tumors was 5 times higher for people who started using mobile phones before 20 years of age.
The research were from University Hospital of Oreboro and Umea, looking at 1251 Swedes who developed brain tumors between 1997 and 2003. They formation was compared with 2438control subjects, matched for age, sex and social class.
Whatever the risks of mobile phone usage, they will be greatly compounded by the installation of smart meters in peoples homes.
The dumbly named Department Of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) says smart meters are a key part of their initiative to tackle climate change. The meters use mobile phone-type signaling to send meter readings.
Electrosensitivity UK at www.es-uk.info says people should be aware of the risks from smart meters. E/S, the Radiation Research Trust, Wired Child, and MCS-Aware have started a campaign to collect 100,000 signatures online and raise awareness of the large numbers of people who will be made sick as a result of the smart meter campaign.
3% of the population are highly sensitive to electromagnetic forces. That's nearly 2 million people whose lives are about to be zapped. They advise all householders to refuse permission to instal smart meters.

MOST people I know feel too connected — not to family or friends, but to electronic devices like smartphones and computers. They feel a need to check e-mails, texts and social networks almost constantly on the off chance that an emergency has popped up in the last five minutes that they absolutely, positively have to address.
Most people I know also would like to feel less connected to those devices. They realize that they could go an hour or a day — or (gasp!) even longer — without going online, but two things prevent it: constantly checking our texts and e-mails has become like a tic, or a hard habit to break; and most of us feel that if everyone else is available 24 hours, then we have to be, too.
“Some industries are so highly volatile that people need to be connected all the time, but most of us overexaggerate our own importance,” said Dalton Conley, dean for the social services at New York University and author of “Elsewhere” (Pantheon, 2009).
“Then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy — if we’re always available, then we’re expected to always be available.”
But, as Professor Conley added, companies are increasingly realizing that employees need to be disconnected from time to time and that “giving workers time to chill helps ultimate long-term productivity.”

I have a medical friend who campaigned about this for years. His experince is that people either really don't want to know, or really try to put you out of business.
ReplyDeleteI know someone who got cancer in the thyroid on the side of the face she always used her phone. She never uses one now.
ReplyDeleteWell my kids & many young are sending more texts or blackberry messaging or i phone web services etc.
ReplyDeleteMaybe less talking so further away from their brain I'd like to think?
are the wired ear pieces better? or worse?

The other thing about electricity smart meters is, that the electricity can be turned off remotely and put on pre-pay.
ReplyDeleteWhereas at the moment, they have to get a warrant from the court to enter your house to disconnect you and install a pre-pay meter.
That gives you some leeway if you fall on hard times, become unemployed and your benefit takes some weeks to come through. Not any more, switch you over to pre-pay at the flick of a switch and you self disconnect yourself if you don't have money for the electricity.
