Bubonic plague getting a foothold in Madagascar

Rats were not the cause of bubonic plague it is the 'yersinia pestis' virus. 
Tara Smith, an
epidemiologist at the University of Iowa and the deputy director of the University of Iowa Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases, has an excellent summary of the debate on her epidemiological blog.
The Plague, for the record, is a simple bacteria, well understood, and pretty easily treatable with antibiotics.

    Years ago when there was no rubbish collection in Yorkshire, there were plenty of rats.
    We caught them, cooked and ate them, and gave the bones to our dogs.
