I use the name Mik...comment from Mike Spilligan ..

I use the name Mike Spilligan as a "Spoonerism" of Spike Milligan, who was a wonderful commentator on the social and political scenes of his time; being able to sum up a situation, throw a new light on it, and then say something lucidly and economically.

He wrote frequently to newspaper letter columns and would certainly have been an excellent blogger if he were alive today.

Incidentally, my real name is rather common (I know three others) and it avoids mistaken identity as there's no other Mike Spilligan as far as I can determine. Actually, I'm a Londoner - seventh generation - now living (sadly) in the East Midlands.

The Tap is becoming one of my favourite points of call - there's often something new, and usually in tune with my spirit.

Thanks, Mike. I knew he was funny, but missed the more serious campaigning aspect. That was in the "heady" days of mid-1998, when the Euro hadn't even got the name. Only Luxembourg complied with the entry "rules", yet 6 months later all the other Euro "wannabees" complied - particularly ironical in the case of Greece as the Drachma was distorted at the same time as the Euro template was pulled out of shape to match. And that was then used to highlight the UK as being "odd man out".
Does anyone remember Blair saying that it was his DESTINY to take the nation into the Euro?Mike Spilligannoreply@blogger.com
