These changes were introduced by Hague were intended to make the Party more democratic, but had the opposite effect of overly centralising the Party, disempowering the membership and the constituencies, bar one vital role - the members are a crucial part of leader selection.

Hague does not want to lead the Party again, but no one could doubt his skill as a communicator.

The task for the Party is twofold, winning power and exercising it. The winning of power has required and still requires Cameron and May etc to act as quasi-Fabians, keeping the media onside.

Once in power, they might have a completely different agenda from the one they espouse while winning power. Don't confuse the two.Tapestryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17267094484651413428noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30136383.post-62322098566964897602010-02-21T17:16:08.289+00:002010-02-21T17:16:08.289+00:00@Tapestry
If Hague had remained leader the Tories ...@Tapestry
If Hague had remained leader the Tories would be 50 points ahead in the polls by now. Their mistake was to push people like May and Cameron to the fore. Whenever I see or hear Teresa May it confirms my worst fears about the Tories.Twighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16698620636313191152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30136383.post-36659662943529550872010-02-21T16:09:49.787+00:002010-02-21T16:09:49.787+00:00Oh yes, and the original author of the list is now...Oh yes, and the original author of the list is now embedded in the post 13 Years And Counting.Tapestryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17267094484651413428noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30136383.post-35531890142436478232010-02-21T15:52:20.078+00:002010-02-21T15:52:20.078+00:00Yes Twig.
