Investigation Continues Into Fatal Explosion at WV Fracking Site

In the early morning hours of July 7, an explosion at a natural gas drill site in Doddridge County, WV, launched federal and state investigations into what ignited the fire and caused the subsequent explosion.
Seven people were injured, and since two men have died due to injuries sustained during the explosion, according to the Associated Press. Jason Mearns, 37, of Beverly, WV, died Sunday at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. Tommy Paxton, 45, of Walton, WV, died at West Penn Hospital on July 24.
The company that operates the drill site, Antero Resources, claims in its report issued by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), that the cause of the blast was a buildup of gas in tanks used to store flow back water from the process of preparing the well for natural gas production.

[Editor's note: I just received clarification that earlier reports that two had died in the oil and gas explosion south of Bolivar was incorrect. Dr. James Hubert, Tuscarawas County coroner, has confirmed that there was one death in today's explosion.]
One person is reported dead after an oil and gas well explosion just south of Bolivar Township and 12 miles south of Canton, Ohio. The explosion happened at 9:34 a.m. while the two workers were painting at the well site.
According to the Times-Reporter:
The explosion sent flames at least 50 feet into the air.
Dr. James Hubert, Tuscarawas County Coroner, said the deaths appear accidental but his investigation is continuing.
Hubert said the identity of the victims won’t be released until after family members are notified. Huth said, however, that some family members had already begun arriving at the scene.
Nathan Mutschelknaus of Dover, an employee of the group home owned and operated by Horizons Inc., was an eye-witness to the explosion.
“I was out back, pressure-washing the porch and moving some of the furniture when the ground started to shake. I was looking over at the oil well, wondering what was shaking.
Next thing I know, I heard the loud explosion and felt the shockwave,” Mutschelknaus told The Times-Reporter.
After a storage tank cover shot about 100 feet into the air, Mutschelknaus said fuel leaked down the driveway into a neighbor’s field.
“The driveway all the way through the ditch into the neighbor’s field was on fire,” he said.
That’s when he saw the green cap of the oil tank land an estimated 50 yards away from its original location.

The fire was under control by 11 a.m., with units from Bolivar, Mineral City, Fairfield Township, Strasburg, Dover, New Philadelphia, Magnolia and Zoar among those to respond. Hazardous-materials crews were working this morning to control the oil spill.
Mutschelknaus said the well and oil-storage tank is about 50 yard yards north of the residential home. Of 12 residents who live at the group home, Mutschelknaus said only one was there at the time of the explosion.
New statistics from the U.S. on oilfield deaths- a warning for the U.K.?
Data released this week by the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics shows that the rise in popularity of hydraulic fracturing caused a sharp upswing in the number of oilfield deaths during the years 2008-2012.
545 people were killed on oilfields during the period, which was also a time of surge for the fracking industry. Since 2005, 82 000 wells have been built in the U.S. States where more sites popped up experienced a higher mortality rate than others. For example, in Texas, the most fracking wells were created since 2005, at 33,000. This state experienced the highest number of fatalities during the period of 2008-2012, leading the country with 216 deaths. There are currently 500,000 active wells in the U.S.
States such as Pennsylvania experienced 300% increase in fatalities, while North Dakota had a 340% increase in deaths during the period.
The figures may serve as a warning to the U.K. The danger of working on fracking sites is likely to be taken into account as the government seeks to follow the U.S’ example of subsidizing the fracking industry over the coming years.
Experts suggest that more health and safety precautions need to be taken to ensure the health of workers on fracking sites, as well as training programmes to educate those starting up work on new wells.
The dangers of fracking are widely known now. Chemicals such as lead, uranium, mercury, ethylene glycol, radium, methanol, hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde are used in the process.
Another factor in the U.S. and Canada has been the problem of trains carrying oil. There have been many reports of these bursting into flames, alongside reports of oilfields exploding.

Platts confirmed CSX Corporation's train that exploded in Lynchburg, Virginia was carrying sweet crude obtained via hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") in North Dakota's Bakken Shale basin. CSX CEO Michael Ward has also confirmed this to Bloomberg.

"Trade sources said the train was carrying Bakken crude from North Dakota and was headed to Plains All American's terminal in Yorktown," Platts explained. "The Yorktown facility can unload 130,000 b/d of crude and is located on the site of Plains oil product terminal."
In January, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration issued a Safety Alert concluding Bakken crude is more flammable than heavier oils. Hence the term "bomb trains."
At least 50,000 gallons of the oil headed to Yorktown is now missing, according to ABC 13 in Lynchburg. Some of it has spilled into the James River, as previously reported on DeSmogBlog.
A map available on CSX's website displaying the routes for its crude-by-rail trains offers a clear indication of where the train was headed.

Permit Shows Bakken Shale Oil in Casselton Train Explosion Contained High Levels of Volatile Chemicals
On January 2, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) issued a major safety alert, declaring oil obtained via hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) in the Bakken Shale may be more chemically explosive than the agency or industry previously admitted publicly.
This alert came three days after the massive Casselton, ND explosion of a freight rail train owned by Warren Buffett Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) and was the first time the U.S. Department of Transportation agency ever made such a statement about Bakken crude. In July 2013, another freight train carrying Bakken crude exploded in Lac-Mégantic, vaporizing and killing 47 people.
Fracking can take place in national parks because the visual intrusion it causes is minimal and the environmental risks have been exaggerated, says the Environment Agency’s outgoing chairman.

'provided' etc. Ha ha ha. The evidence from around the world that fracking contaminates and kills in all its locations, and is not controllable by regulation and management, is being ignored. See Paul Mobbs and his opinion that Cameron's dodgy dossier on fracking is simply criminal. Government ministers who repeat the stock phrase 'provided etc' are repeating the crime. The report they are quoting is McKay and Stone. It ignored all the evidence to reach a pre-ordained conclusion. That's the same as Alastair Campbell's dodgy dossier - except this time the risks are sexed down not up.

Whole fields of pale blue poppies in between the usual fields of rapeseed and sunflowers Family been living in SW France for over 15 years and never happened before. Don't believe its a coincidence that the troops are pulling out of Afghanistan. Whoever planted these, presumably farmers though that doesn't necessarily follow, got the heads-up last year. Interesting times we live in.

ReplyDeleteWhere does geoengineering, (the altering of the earth or its environment) Chemtrailing, come into the Clean Air Act when it pollutes the skies over our towns and cities throwing down noxious chemicals and blocking sunlight? Likewise Fracking which releases methane into the atmosphere?
Where does the billions of gallons of polluted water from Fracking loaded with carcinogenic chemicals and is ignitable from your household taps come into the Clean Water Act and the Rivers and Harbours Act? Yet as one MP put it “It'll be fine.”
I've heard it said that "America has been Fracking for forty years or more." So what! Does that make it right! This article clearly demonstrates the explosive side of Fracking in North America. There are major problems here and big ones at that which we are not told about. The reality is the same, corruption and greed in favour of the few with a blatant disregard for the many and the environment.
Can it honestly be said that the UK government, or for that matter any other government, have the welfare and well-being of its nation at heart when it connives to allow such a nocuous and detrimental process to pollute, injure and destroy the natural environmental amenities and habitats of our country and planet.
What we need is a complete overhaul of the less than 1% that govern this country which favours
corporatism, whose criminal activities benefit not the populace but themselves, corporations, banksters and investors while we the 99% are walked all over and Fracked to the hilt.
