Full censorship in the UK is coming, according to this article in yesterday's Daily Telegraph:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/terrorism-in-the-uk/11129474/Extremists-to-have-Facebook-and-Twitter-vetted-by-anti-terror-police.html
It's
interesting to note that in the USA Southern 'slave states' and 'slave
territories', until the abolition of slavery in 1861, those who opposed
slavery were always labeled as 'extremists'.
In the Soviet Union, 'extremists' - those who did not agree with Communism - were 'put away' in mental institutions.

Hannah Arendt blamed conspiracy theory for the rise of totalitarianism. In The Origins of Totalitarianism she described how the conspiracy manic masses craved "backstairs literature" re-the triple-headed conspiracy of freemasons, Jesuits and Jews who they had come to believe were the Shadow Power behind revolutions, depressions and wars.
ReplyDeleteFor Arendt, the masses were incapable of understanding that happenstance or serendipity were more important motive forces in history than conspiracy.
Then again, Arendt's work was sponsored by the Guggenheim Foundation and she therefore had a vested interest in maintaining official fictions.
