This is a brilliant comment taken from direct democracy today on the virtues or otherwise of the Irish PR system -
I am English living in Eire (pay income tax in UK). Ireland has a very complicated PR system, (takes weeks sometimes in some constituencies to get a result!). Last election I knew exactly which party I did NOT want and voted accordingly.
After the election, the party I did not want had the most seats but not an overall majority. Unfortunately one party I did vote for entered into coalition with the party I did not want. After elections the electors have no say in the agreements made by parties behind closed doors. I certainly did not think that my vote counted. Keep FPTP! Barry
